About this process
Study and understand how physical, cognitive, social, cultural, and emotional factors will determine the overall user experience and expectations. This tool provides a very structured process to focus on key human factors and key details that will make you gather data and insights in a much insightful way. The five human factors is a tool used during ethnographic research and are known in the design, marketing, and R&D field. It helps the researcher look deeper by following a simple process. If this is your first time doing research start with our "POEMS" tool.

1. User observation.
Go out into the field and observe and/or engage people. Take notes down and look through the five human factors lens by following this template or creating your own. Five human factors: Physical:** How do people experience their physical interaction with things (the object or platform)? How do they experience it with other people? What do they touch or do? Do they close it, lift it, push it or open it? Cognitive:** What do they associate with it? What meaning do they associate with the thing (object or platform)? What interactions are required for people to think? What do they do? What do they read? What do they access? What is the process? What is their decision? Social:** How do people behave in social settings or working with a team? How do they coordinate the team and each activity? How do they make decisions, and how do they formally and informally interact? Cultural:** What are the shared norms and values? What are their habits? How do people experience those shared norms and values? Are those values solid? How do they manifest? Emotional:** How do people experience their feelings and thoughts, and how do they talk about it? What are the emotions they feel? Are people sad, happy, or frustrated? What is the environment? What makes them feel certain emotions and have certain thoughts? What is the emotional awareness in the room?
2. Describe peoples' experiences.
Based on your observations, describe people's experience.
