1. Awareness — “I realize I have a problem (or opportunity).”
The objective is to understand how your customer thinks, feels, and acts at every stage — and design experiences that reduce friction, build trust, and increase momentum.
Start with awareness. 🔥
Awareness — “I realize I have a problem (or opportunity).”
What to think about:
This is where potential customers first notice the problem you solve or become aware of your existence. Your job is to help them name the problem — even before they know you’re the solution.
Customer actions:
👉Searching for solutions or information online.
👉 Reading articles, watching videos, or scrolling social media.
👉 Asking peers for recommendations.
Touchpoints:
Blog posts, videos, social ads, SEO pages, social media posts, influencer mentions, PR, events, word of mouth.
Customer experience:
They’re curious, not committed. They want clarity, not a pitch.
Their emotions: confusion, curiosity, mild urgency.
Solutions / best practices:
✔Educate, don’t sell. Publish practical, no-fluff content.
✔ Use stories or comparisons to name their pain clearly.
✔ Offer diagnostic tools, checklists, or assessments (“Where are you losing time?”).
Focus messaging on recognition of pain, not features.
Formula:
👉 Awareness Message = “You know that feeling when [pain] happens? It’s not just you — here’s why it’s happening and how to fix it.”
2. Consideration — “I’m exploring options to fix it.”
What to think about:
They know what’s wrong and are now evaluating solutions.
Your goal: prove credibility, relevance, and fit — and make choosing you feel like the smart move.
Customer actions:
Touchpoints:
Comparison pages, webinars, demos, email nurturing, review platforms, product tours, ROI calculators.
Customer experience:
😡😃🤔Analytical but cautious. They want confidence, not hype.
Their emotions: interest, skepticism, rational evaluation.
Common pains:
💢Hard to see differences between providers.
💢 Don’t trust claims without proof.
💢 Confused pricing or unclear benefits.
Solutions / best practices:
Formula:
👉 Consideration Message = “If you’re comparing [category], here’s how to know what actually works — and why teams like yours chose us.”
3. Purchase / Decision — “I’m choosing who to buy from.”
What to think about:
The decision moment — minimize friction and perceived risk.
This stage is about confidence and commitment.
Customer actions:
Touchpoints:
Sales call, proposal deck, free trial, testimonials, security documentation, onboarding preview.
Customer experience:
Common pains:
💢 Unclear ROI or next steps.
💢 Approval delays from internal stakeholders.
💢 Hidden fees or confusion over implementation.
Solutions / best practices:
Create a Decision Kit: case study, proposal, 1-pager, FAQ, onboarding overview.
Visualize ROI or future state (before/after).
💫Reduce micro-frictions: shorter contracts, flexible trials, easy sign-off flows.
💫 Have champions co-present internally (empower your buyer).
Formula:
👉 Decision Message = “Here’s what your first 30 days will look like, how fast you’ll see results, and exactly what we’ll do together.”
4. Onboarding / Activation — “I’m starting to use it.”
This is where loyalty is born (or lost). The time to first value is everything.
Customer actions:
👉Setting up, integrating, or learning the product.
👉Interacting with support, CSMs, or tutorials.
Touchpoints:
Welcome email, setup guide, product walkthrough, kickoff call, templates, onboarding checklist, success metrics.
Customer experience:
Common pains:
💢Complex setup.
💢Missing guidance or unclear ownership.
💢“Quiet onboarding” (they sign in once, then disappear).
Solutions / best practices:
Formula:
👉 Onboarding Experience = Simple + Guided + Celebratory.
5. Retention / Engagement — “I’m getting consistent value.”
Retention is driven by habit and proof of progress.
Your role: keep demonstrating value, listen actively, and evolve the relationship.
Customer actions:
👉 Using product regularly.
👉 Measuring ROI or performance.
Touchpoints:
Product usage dashboards, success calls, newsletters, account reviews, in-app prompts, feedback forms.
Customer experience:
Common pains:
💢 Stagnation — usage plateaus.
💢 Poor support responsiveness.
💢 Value not visible to decision-makers.
Solutions / best practices:
Formula:
👉 Retention Strategy = Show value + Reinforce habit + Anticipate needs.
6. Expansion — “I’m growing with you.”
Once trust exists, expansion happens naturally if you keep showing ROI. This stage is about alignment and timing, not aggressive upsell.
Customer actions:
👉 Buying add-ons, more seats, or new features.
👉 Referring new departments.
Touchpoints:
Success reviews, targeted upsell emails, feature announcements, referral requests.
Customer experience:
They want to feel like partners, not prospects.
Common pains:
💢 Irrelevant upsells (“They don’t get my needs”).
💢 No clear upgrade path.
💢 Renewal discussions starting too late.
Solutions / best practices:
Use data to trigger relevant suggestions (“You’re using 80% of your limit — ready to scale?”).
Co-create success milestones that justify expansion.
Align upsells with customer’s internal KPIs.
Formula:
👉 Expansion = Help them hit their next milestone, and growth becomes obvious.
7. Understand their motivations
You want to understand what your buyers are trying to achieve — both emotionally and functionally. This insight will help you craft sharper messaging and more effective marketing strategies.
Ask yourself:
Then, turn this insight into a Jobs to Be Done statement using this formula:
👉 When [context], but [barrier], help me [goal], so I can [desired outcome].
8. Key findings
Quickly align on the key moments in the experience — these should become the team’s main focus.
Give each person three voting tabs (dots, flags, or any markers).
Ask everyone to vote on the moments or statements they believe would have the biggest impact if improved.
Say:
“If we were to focus on just three aspects of this experience, which ones do you personally believe would make the biggest difference?”
9. 💬 How will I move the buyer forward along their journey, keeping my solution or product in mind
Ask yourself:
💬“How will I move the buyer forward along their journey, keeping my solution or product in mind?”
Once you’ve mapped your customer journey, take a screenshot or download it, then upload it to your AI tool and use this prompt:
🤖AI Prompt:
“Based on this customer journey, identify the two stages where focusing our efforts would have the greatest impact on conversion and retention. For each of these stages, suggest two specific actions we can take to reduce friction, increase engagement, or accelerate progress. Explain why these actions would be most effective.”
This will help you pinpoint the most strategic areas to improve — and ensure every action you take moves the buyer meaningfully forward.
