About this process

This framework helps companies identify their core purpose by intersecting four key elements: what the team loves, what the team excels at, what the world needs, and what the team can be paid for. This holistic approach ensures that your business strategy is both fulfilling and sustainable, providing clear direction and focus by aligning passion, skills, societal impact, and financial viability.

1. Finding Your Business's Purpose or Direction

This framework helps you identify "the reason" "the main focus" or the "purpose"– in other words, the core purpose and main focus of your business (or team). It’s the perfect tool for companies or teams that seem to be doing too many things without a clear direction or focus. Here’s how to lead that conversation:

On the whiteboard, you will see a graphic that represents the intersection of four elements:

❤️What the Team Loves: Identify the activities and projects that excite and motivate your team. This element ensures that your work brings joy and satisfaction, fostering long-term engagement and enthusiasm.

📌What the Team and Company are Good At: Determine the skills and talents within your team. Ask yourselves where you thrive and what you can do exceptionally well. This element focuses on leveraging your strengths and achieving mastery in your field.

🌎What the World Needs: Understand and address the needs and challenges of your customers and the broader community. These are the core values and contributions that can make the world a better place. This element ensures that your business has a meaningful impact.

🤑What Your Team Can Be Paid For: Identify the demand for your products or services and what clients are willing to pay for. This element focuses on financial viability and ensuring that your business can sustain itself economically.

Each element is crucial in creating a fulfilling and balanced decision about the direction your business should go. This approach is inspired by the concept of Ikigai.

In the intersection of these four elements, you will find your focus. This intersection is the backbone of your purpose and helps you prioritize your work and strategy. By aligning what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for, you create a clear and purposeful direction for your business.

Use this framework to evaluate and refine your business strategy, ensuring that every action you take is aligned with your core purpose. This will lead to a more focused, motivated, and successful team.
