1. Assign each team member a character.
The Session Leader should assign each team member a character card on the Cannibal board. There can be no duplicate characters on each team, and at least one person must be the Interpreter. Character cards: Obese doctor Young athlete Prostitute who knows how to hunt Old man who knows the area Blind locksmith Sick biologist Philanthropist who is deaf Interpreter who knows the language of the tribe
2. The Scenario
The exercise will take about 10-30 minutes. Here's the scenario (also included on the board): The team is a group of tourists traveling in the jungle with a tour guide. During their tour, they're captured by a tribe of cannibals. The cannibals eat the guide and lock up the tourists. Having filled up on the guide, the cannibals will wait one week before eating their next victim. The tourists (the team) will have to choose who will be eaten next, and after each round discuss who the next victim will be the following week. When a character is eaten, they can no longer be part of the discussion but should stay and listen. The interpreter needs to negotiate with the cannibals, and will therefore always make the final decision of who will be eaten (with input from the team). If the interpreter is eaten, the team lead will choose who will be eaten next. After everybody has read and understood this step, proceed to the next step. Notes: Team lead role = "Cannibals" If the interpreter is eaten, the team lead will choose who will be eaten next. They will not be able to negotiate but you can't tell them why. The team will have 2-5 min to discuss an escape plan every week.
3. First week
Start by making a decision for the first week. You will collectively decide how you want to proceed. If the team doesn’t decide who will be eaten, the team leader will decide who the cannibals eat. Mark this step as completed when you finish the game for the week. Return to this session when you want to start your next session.
4. Make decisions for the second week
For the second week, decide again how you want to proceed. If the team doesn’t decide who will be eaten, the team leader will decide who the cannibals eat.
5. Make decisions for the third week
For the third week, the leader will ask them if they made a plan to survive. The leader should ask questions like: 'How will you escape the cage', 'How will you get away from the tribe unnoticed', 'How will you find your way back to civilization?'
6. Listen to the escape plan
The Team Leader will listen to the escape plan, and they get to decide if the team will survive or not. If the Team Leader (along with input from other groups/teams if that applies to your situation) decides the plan will not work, the Cannibals will eat 2 people rather than 1.
7. Continue to attempt escape and record progress
Each team can make another attempt at escape until they are successful or eaten. The team lead may choose to record how the team worked together and any improvements that can be made in the session output.
- CANNIBAL
- The exercise will take about 10 minutes. We recommend providing 2-5 min per week for a session of Cannibal with the team. Here is the scenario: The team is a group of tourists traveling in the jungle with a tour guide. During their tour, they are captured by a tribe of cannibals. The cannibals have eaten the guide and locked up the tourists. Since the cannibals filled up on the guide, they have one week to take their next victim. The tourists will need to choose who will be eaten next and decide who will be eaten each week afterward. When a character is eaten, he/she can no longer be part of the discussion but can stay and listen. The interpreter will be the one talking with the cannibal tribe. The team lead will act as the "Cannibal leader". Every time someone gets eaten, the tribe will add a red cross.
