1. The Overall Strategy
The Overall Strategy starts by defining the following concepts.
a. Product and Service 🛠🛍
What you offer to solve a customer’s problem or meet their need.
Think of your product or service as the hero of your strategy. It’s not just about what you sell but why it matters to your customer. Whether it’s a physical item, a service, or even an idea, focus on how it solves pain points or improves their life.
Ask yourself:
• “What makes my product uniquely valuable?”
• “What problem does my product or service solve?”
• “How does my offering stand out from competitors?”
• “Are there any new features or versions we should introduce based on customer feedback?”
• “How well does my product align with current market trends and customer expectations?”
b. Price & Promotion 🎟🎫
How much customers pay and the perceived value they get in return.
Price is not just a number; it’s a signal of value. Setting the right price requires balancing profitability with what your audience is willing to pay. Think about pricing as a strategy: offering premium pricing to show exclusivity, discounts for accessibility, or subscriptions for recurring revenue.
Ask yourself:
“Is my price aligned with the value customers believe they’re getting?”
Promotion:
How you tell the world about your product and persuade them to buy.
Promotion is all about storytelling. From social media ads to email campaigns, it’s the voice of your brand. Great promotion connects emotionally and highlights your product’s benefits in a way that resonates. Always focus on your unique selling proposition (USP).
Ask yourself:
“Am I telling a compelling story that speaks to my audience?”
c. Place & Physical Evidence 🏟🎁
Where your product is available and how it reaches your customers.
Place is about being in the right place at the right time. This could mean retail stores, e-commerce platforms, or direct sales. Think strategically about the channels your audience prefers and make it as easy as possible for them to access your product.
Ask yourself:
“Am I meeting my customers where they already are?”
Physical Evidence:
The tangible aspects that make your brand and product memorable.
This includes everything your customers see, touch, or experience — your packaging, website, store layout, or even the design of your email templates. Physical evidence builds trust and reinforces your brand identity.
Ask yourself:
“Does my physical evidence convey professionalism and align with my brand?”
d. Communication & Presentation💬💫
The more psychological part of the strategy is about how you talk about your product, how you communicate with your customers, and how you present and persuade clients and potential clients to secure your spot in the market.
Define your communication strategy:
• What channels will you use?
• What will you talk about?
• How will you talk about it?
• What’s the story of your products and services?
How will you present new updates and manage first impressions?
For example, if you plan to involve influencers to share posts about your brand or solution, ensure that the way you present your product aligns with your guidelines.
This is also about choosing the channels that align with your audience and that you believe could support your goals or help you change your current circumstances.
2. People and Relationships
Start by thinking about the team behind the product/service and the customer experience.
Your people are your brand ambassadors. They represent your values and create memorable experiences for your customers. Invest in training, motivation, and hiring the right talent.
Ask yourself:
“Do my people embody the brand and deliver outstanding service?”
This pillar is also about external relationships and the value you exchange to ensure mutual success.
🤓Think about:
• What partners do you need?
• What would you offer, and what do you need them to offer in exchange?
✨✔Define:
• What people on your team need to succeed?
• Who else is needed?
• Who is no longer needed or needs a role change?
• What skills or knowledge are required?
• What other people can support knowledge gaps and other needs (mentors, advisors, consultants)?
• What additional partners, distributors, or agreements are needed?
3. Leadership
How can a team achieve success without the support of its leaders? What actions need to be taken by the leadership team to support them?
When thinking about this pillar, ensure the leadership team:
• Removes blockers.
• Provides clarity when teams stray off course.
• Ensures teams have what they need to focus on their work.
Key leadership responsibilities include:
1. Creating a healthy environment: Establish team rules, manage conflicts, and foster a space where everyone feels safe to speak up and share ideas.
2. Providing security and a growth path: Clarify success and growth opportunities while ensuring job security.
3. Helping employees find purpose and passion: Identify strengths and passions, assign roles that align with them, and give autonomy.
4. Providing support and guidance: Tailor support to individual needs without micromanaging.
5. Defining values and habits: Regularly hold 1:1s, give feedback, and discuss results and learnings with the team.
4. Processes & the Plan
Without processes, teams operate inefficiently, often leading to confusion and wasted effort. Processes establish commitments and clarity.
Define:
• What processes need to be implemented or improved?
• How will decisions be made?
• What should the team start planning?
5. Cash & Investments
No strategy can succeed without reevaluating cash flow and investments.
Key considerations:
1. Balancing short-term needs with long-term goals: Ensure sufficient cash for operations while funding strategic initiatives.
2. Evaluating ROI: Tie every investment to measurable outcomes.
3. Scenario planning: Prepare for best-case, worst-case, and most likely scenarios.
4. Alignment with strategy: Prioritize investments that support your strategic vision.
