About this process

Rapidly move from an uninformed perspective to an informed perspective based on trends by challenging assumptions, identifying opportunities, and focusing on the process and next steps. This tool will help you and your team adapt your current perspective towards a new perspective that will suggest an improved direction for the project. This tool is also ideal to develop a common understanding of current and future trends, how those may affect projects, and how the team, organization, or product will need to adapt as new trends become the status quo.

The process in detail

1. Getting familiar with the board.

Getting familiar with the board. The four columns represent the following: Aspects:** Aspects are key areas of the project that you think need to innovate (improve/change). Could be specific services, features, or even departments. Trends:** "where we've been" and "where we may be headed". You can show how "hot" a trend is by using different sticky note colors. For example, use the red sticky note to show trends that are becoming predominant and grey for those trends that are dying. From:** These are you and your team's conventions and assumptions and the things that are currently happening. Including " What is now" and what you believe is conventional like "a discussion environment is a boardroom" or "employees are more effective working at the office". To:** Base on your knowledge and understanding of all the trends start imagining "what might be". Reframe current conventions and believes and think about the new generation and how they will reframe things that are now standard.

2. Aspect Brainstorm.

Discussion: Add a list of aspects you think need to be redesigned and reframed and needs to innovate.

3. Move to the grid. Fill out Aspects, Trends, From.

Discussion Discuss with the team and select five and add them to the "Aspect" column. Identify all the latest trends and changes affecting the project. If the project is "the restaurant industry" during a pandemic you may add trends related to "food pick up", and "delivery services". You may need to give everyone 20-30 mins to work in silence and gather information from online websites, etc. Add them to the "trends" column. Describe current perspectives based on conventions and add them to the "from..." section. You may ask yourself: What is now? What do I believe is true? What seems to be the right way for my generation or older generations?

4. "To..." - The new perspective.

Now you have a table with trends and conventions, and you need to reframe your current beliefs and current conventions to imagine what would happen in the future. During this step, you will be answering the question: "What might be..." Look at the "From..." column as if it is saying: This is now, but I think [X] is what might be. Your new future perspective should keep trends in mind. You can organize all the sticky notes to track your thinking process better.

5. Discuss new opportunities.

How could these new perspectives lead your team and your organization to innovation and growth? Which of these new perspectives do you think your organization will be able to deliver and lead? Copy any key perspective sticky notes to conclusions for future reference.
