About this process
When trying to create a solution for a broad market, it is important to understand unusual/extreme users in addition to your mainstream users. When you study extreme users, you will be exposed to use cases and problem-solving opportunities you may never have thought about, and will also uncover important insights about your mainstream users by contrast. This tool provides a useful method to understand your extreme users and how they differ from the mainstream.

1. Add user types to the board for extreme and mainstream users
Start by adding user types to the board and a basic description of each. You may want to have a persona prepared for each of these users using the Persona tool, but it is not required.
2. Understand differences and commonalities between user types
When you have a basic definition for your extreme and mainstream users, the next step is to understand the difference between each audience as well as what they have in common. Tip: If you do not already have this information, the best way to do this is through interviews. You can also use secondary information from blogs, statistics, etc. If you do not have this information, we recommend adding an interview tool to your project before continuing this session.

3. Once you understand commonalities and differences, analyze opportunities
Do the differences between your audiences, and how they use your product, reveal anything about your users? Have a certain subset of users uncovered problems in your offering? Are power users already solving them? Can you think about how the results might affect your organization in terms of marketing, sales, products, price points, advertising, work culture, interior design, and communications? Analyze any opportunites the results might present. You can also expand the data you’ve gathered by using discussion tools such as Six Thinking Hats to brainstorm new ideas and solve any problems you’ve uncovered.
