1. Circle of Competence

A concept popularized by Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger, the Circle of Competence helps leaders focus on what they truly understand and avoid pretending to be experts in areas they’re not.

👀✍How it works: Imagine a circle that represents the subjects, skills, or domains where you have real experience and understanding — this is your “circle.” Everything outside the circle is what you don’t know well, even if it might seem related or easy from the outside.

Application: Great leaders know what’s inside their circle and operate confidently within it. When faced with decisions or challenges outside of it, they ask for help, seek input, or choose not to act until they understand more. For example, a product leader might be excellent at user research and go-to-market planning but rely on legal experts when drafting contracts or compliance policies.

How it helps: This model encourages intellectual honesty. It prevents overconfidence, reduces risk, and strengthens team trust. When leaders clearly communicate what they know — and what they don’t — they create space for others to contribute and make better decisions as a team.

2. How to use it step by step:

List your true areas of expertise. Ask yourself: What have I spent years learning or practicing? Where do I have results, not just opinions?

Be honest about what’s outside. Identify subjects you often comment on, but haven’t studied deeply or practiced directly. These are outside your circle.

Test assumptions. Ask colleagues, mentors, or direct reports where they see your strengths and where they believe you may be guessing. Compare this with your self-assessment.

Stay within the circle for key decisions. When something falls outside your expertise, delegate, collaborate, or take time to learn before acting.

Expand slowly and intentionally. When you want to grow your circle, do so through deliberate learning, practice, and real-world experience — not assumptions.
