1. Overview.

Greiner's Growth Model, developed by Larry Greiner, is a valuable framework that sheds light on these phases, offering insights into the internal hurdles companies may face and the paths they can take to overcome them.

1) Growth Through Creativity:

Every business starts with a creative spark - an idea nurtured and evolved over time.

This phase is characterized by creativity, innovation, agility, and the pursuit of finding the perfect product-market fit.

2) Growth Through Direction:

As companies evolve, the need for structure arises.

3) Growth Through Delegation:

In the Delegation phase, key staff members are entrusted with accountability and responsibility in their areas of expertise.

Delegation becomes paramount as specialists join the workforce, and some frameworks and processes are implemented to support that delegation.

4) Growth Through Coordination:

This phase emphasizes synergy between departments. All departments work harmoniously, leveraging core competencies to deliver products or services. Clear roles, defined responsibilities, effective workflows, and streamlined communication are hallmarks of this mature stage.

5) Growth Through Collaboration:

Collaboration marks a mature company. A positive problem-solving culture prevails, and teamwork is streamlined. Employees feel valued, contributing ideas for growth. Simplicity in processes, combined with effective communication, fosters an environment where success is a collective effort.

6) Growth Through Alliances:

In this modern addition to the model, strategic alliances become pivotal. Mergers, acquisitions, partnerships, and collaborations are explored to fuel further growth. Diversification and industry evaluation guide the company's strategic evolution.

Each growth phase is accompanied by potential crises, such as the Crisis of Leadership, Crisis of Autonomy, Crisis of Control, Crisis of Red Tape, and Crisis of Growth. These crises serve as critical points for reassessment and strategic redirection.

•Leadership Crisis (During Creativity): Informal management becomes challenging as the team expands.
•Autonomy Crisis (During Direction): Managers focus on their units, causing conflicts in decision-making.
•Control Crisis (During Delegation): Difficulty in relinquishing control and communication gaps.
•Red Tape Crisis (During Coordination): Bureaucratic processes hinder agility and efficiency.
•Growth Crisis (During Collaboration or Alliances): The challenge lies in sustaining growth strategies.
2. Identify the gaps/Challenges.

Which may include:

•Lack of basic operational processes.
•Unclear company direction and value proposition.
•Absence of a foundation for growth.
•Overburdened key staff with excessive responsibilities.
•Lack of ownership among team members, with managers driving progress.
•Insufficient department-specific processes for effective delegation and workflow.
•A shortage of specialized professionals.
•Leaders lacking time for leadership tasks like team management, culture, training, and guidance.
•Written but unimplemented processes.
•Poor coordination of tasks between departments, with no systems or technology for clarity.
•Ineffective communication across departments, leading to silos and lost communication.
•Knowledge hoarding among leaders and skilled team members.
•Undefined roles and responsibilities.
•Limited collaboration between departments in decision-making.
•Stagnant or non-adaptive processes.
•Poor team performance and shared objectives.
•Bureaucracy hindering agility and efficiency.
•Red tape without clear and efficient processes.

Categorize gaps based on phases: creativity, direction, delegation, coordination, and collaboration.

3. Visualize and Prioritize.

Use sticky notes to represent each gap (we are adding a few to the board for your) and categorize them according to the respective growth phases.

Assess Your Current Position:

•Compile a detailed list outlining your current position and the specific areas needing improvement.
•Consider factors like communication, delegation, coordination, and strategic decision-making.

Prioritize.

🔥👀Prioritize addressing gaps in earlier phases before those in later phases. Vote for those that seem urgent and important to look into.

4. Team Discussion and Prioritization.
•Engage in team discussions to identify challenges to tackle within the next 3–6 months.
•Prioritize challenges based on their impact and urgency.
5. Brainstorm Solutions.

Brainstorm and discuss solutions and initiatives to address the identified challenges.
