1. Map their growth opportunities.

When employees join a new organization, it's common for them to imagine how their life will evolve and how they'll grow within the team over time. Whether you're a small or large organization, it's important to have conversations with your team about their career growth plan.

Start by mapping out the growth opportunities available. Ask yourself: What could their career look like in 2 to 5 years if they achieve all their objectives?

Identify at least the next two steps in their potential career path. Then, have a conversation with the employee to explore whether that path aligns with their goals. You can also suggest alternatives that match both their strengths and the opportunities within the company.

2. How their progress and efforts will be evaluated.

Next, define how their progress and efforts will be evaluated. Begin by identifying the key areas they’ll be assessed on and the kinds of achievements that are expected.

Then, set clear KPIs to guide their focus and objectives. In addition, clarify the kind of innovation or strategic thinking you expect from them.

Make sure to also discuss the type of relationship they’re expected to build with the team, the attitude they should bring to work, and how they’re expected to invest in their own self-development to continue growing.

Once you’ve outlined how employees will be evaluated, define how you’ll provide feedback. When will feedback be shared? What kind of feedback will it be? What aspects will be reviewed? Who will be involved—will it include feedback from clients or team members? Also, be clear on any rewards or recognition that might be given along the way.

This framework helps leaders clearly define what growth looks like, how success will be measured, and what’s expected from employees—so they know exactly how their performance will be evaluated.

3. We believe that ... if people don’t know what’s expected, they can’t meet expectations—and they definitely can’t exceed them.
