1. Map Your Competitive Landscape
Identify and analyze your main competitors and the key features that give them a competitive advantage. Focus on 2 or 3 key competitors.
1️⃣ Choose your competitors and add their names to the top of each column in your comparison table. Include your own company or product/service as well to create a clear benchmark.
2️⃣ On the left side, list 5 to 7 key features or characteristics that are important in your market — the ones you’re currently studying or that help competitors stand out.
3️⃣ Once you’ve defined your competitors and key features, evaluate each feature using a 1-to-5 scale:
1 = Poor implementation or design of the feature/solution
5 = Excellent usability, design, and implementation of the feature/solution
This exercise will help you clearly see:
By reviewing your table, you’ll be able to answer key strategic questions such as:
When you’ve completed this exercise, continue to the next step.
2. Define Your Competitive advantage
By looking at your comparison table, take a step back and explore what makes your product or service truly different. Your secret sauce is the unique combination of strengths, decisions, and approaches that competitors can’t easily copy — and that your customers deeply value.
Secret Sauce = (Your Unique Strengths + Customer Value) × (Hard-to-Copy Advantage)
3. Explore where you are positioned in the market.
Now, this next step should take around 2 minutes.
Explore where you are positioned in the market. Write down the name of each competitor on a sticky note (one per note), and then move them around based on their price and level of innovation.
Competitors with lower prices and less innovation are typically followers in the ecosystem.
Those who invest in innovation can justify higher prices and often lead the industry by attracting early adopters eager to experience what’s next.
Now ask yourself:
What’s one thing you can do better to reach — or stay — where you want to be?
4. Visual evaluation and inspiration.
Now, take 10 minutes to review what your competitors — and others in your industry — are doing. Capture screenshots, save examples, or copy and paste articles, ads, or visuals that inspire you.
Use this as your inspiration board for a few minutes, then explore how your brand or product should look and feel. Identify the key elements that must be true for your upcoming launch — these will serve as creative direction for your design team (or AI).
Define your branding:
Add any links or references that capture your vision.
Make sure this inspiration board helps you stay competitive — and positions you exactly where you want to be in the market.
5. 📸 Share Your Competitive Analysis and Moodboard
Take a screenshot or export your comparison table where you evaluated your product against competitors.
Make sure it clearly shows the key features and how each solution performs (on a 1–5 scale or similar).
Include inspiration from competitors, other industries, or brands that express the tone and personality you aspire to.
If you want to use AI to refine your focus and understand which features matter most to customers, use this prompt:
“Analyze the following competitive analysis and identify which product features are most important to customers and where my product can stand out. Suggest 3–5 areas where focusing improvements or messaging could create a stronger competitive advantage.”

1. 🗂 Describe the initiative
Provide a brief summary that gives an overview of the epic’s goals, objectives, and desired outcomes.
2. 💥💨⭐ The problem, the beneficiary, and the pain.
🌟 A Solution to a Problem
💬 User / Buyer Pain
🔥 Tip: Pains can be:
By identifying and addressing pain points, you can create a much more compelling value proposition and define the perfect solution — one that truly resonates with customers and keeps them coming back.
Also, evaluate whether your solution is a pain reliever or if it’s fully solving the problem.
💥 Note: Pain relievers describe how your products or services directly alleviate specific customer pains.
🧠 Questions to Guide You
3. Business value & success metrics.
4. What are the non-negotiables and must-haves?
Think carefully and include even the items that may seem obvious. These define your MVP and your initial focus. They also represent the things you must ensure work reliably and aren’t forgotten amid the chaos of collaboration. As information flows and work progresses, these elements must remain true.
✔️ Prioritize features (MVP vs. later versions).
✔️ Define the product scope clearly.
✔️ Create a high-level roadmap.
5. Explore Improvements✨
Take a moment to refine your solution and how you think about it. You don’t need to be a genius to outperform the big players — you just need to look where they don’t. ✨
So, spend a few seconds exploring alternative ways to approach your solution by asking yourself these three questions:
🧠Consider these 3 questions to improve your approach. If they spark anything, include those potential ideas here; otherwise, skip this step.
6. Define the final requirements for your solution and add any additional notes on how it should work.

1. 🎯 Design the solution.
Here’s a comprehensive must-do checklist (with checkmarks ✅) that designers can follow when designing a product:
- ✅ Review the product requirements and clarify the goal of the feature or product.
- ✅ Identify who the user is and what pain points the design is solving.
- ✅ Ask: “What problem are we solving?” and “How will we know this design works?”
- ✅ Align with PMs or stakeholders before starting visuals — don’t design in the dark.
2. 🧠 Research & Inspiration
Here’s a comprehensive must-do checklist (with checkmarks ✅) that designers can follow when designing a product:
- ✅ Study competitors and industry standards — what already works?
- ✅ Collect references and moodboards for layout, color, and interaction ideas.
- ✅ Review analytics, customer interviews, or feedback for real user insights.
- ✅ Document 2–3 key user behaviors or flows that must be supported.
3. 🧩 Define User Flows & Structure
Here’s a comprehensive must-do checklist (with checkmarks ✅) that designers can follow when designing a product:
- ✅ Map the user journey — from entry to goal completion.
- ✅ Define information architecture (IA): where things live, how users navigate.
- ✅ Identify key decision points and friction moments.
- ✅ Validate that every step supports the main business and user goal.
4. 🧩 Define User Flows & Structure
Here’s a comprehensive must-do checklist (with checkmarks ✅) that designers can follow when designing a product:
- ✅ Use consistent spacing, alignment, and visual hierarchy.
- ✅ Create interactive prototypes to test navigation and usability.
- ✅ Validate whether this solution is feasible, achievable within the timeframe, and takes into account factors such as cost and other design constraints.
- ✅ Follow the brand system: color palette, typography, icons, and component library.
- ✅ Maintain contrast and accessibility (WCAG standards).
- ✅ Keep consistency across all screens and states.
- ✅ Prioritize clarity over decoration — the design should guide, not distract.
- ✅ Gather feedback from users, PMs, and developers.
- ✅ Identify confusing elements and simplify interactions. (Explore improvements)
5. Gather feedback.
While you should gather feedback from the PM, engineering team, and key stakeholders throughout the design process, once the mockup is nearly ready, you must collect final feedback from all stakeholders to get the design approved.
Please use the “Feedback Session” to gather input or lead the meeting effectively.
