1. Prepare & Set the Session Goals (optional)

Review and add additional information about this Session in the Session Goals / Instructions. Add any additional ideas that come to mind or include additional links for the team/stakeholders.

2. List your segments / audiences.

List your segments: Write down the people or groups of people that could directly use or be affected by your solution, challenge, idea, or product. Describe your different segments: Define their main characteristics. *Example: Are you designing or developing a solution for moms, entrepreneurs, or graphic designers? Write down all the groups with their specific characteristics.

3. Define their personality traits?

What makes your buyer/user different from your anti-buyer? Do they have any characteristic traits or habits we should highlight?

Write a note
4. Find influencers.

With your team, write down all the people who are directly involved in the buying process (or who are decision-makers) and can affect how these groups make the decision about using your product. In some cases, family or friends are big influencers, and in other cases, the user is not the buyer. For example, parents buy toys for their kids, but kids use them. Kids will use the toy and will decide how long they will play with that toy. The decision-makers are the parents, and they are influenced by other parents and parenting magazines. Note: Continue the discussion focusing on the user or buyer depending on the purpose of the session or project. If you are trying to create a marketing strategy, you may decide to focus on the buyer. You may decide to focus on the user if you are developing a product.

5. Colours & Style.

What colors pallete and style do they usually follow? What is currently trendy?

Write a note
8. Define the customer’s current state and ideal state.

In this step, with your team, define how the user and the buyer feel without your solution and how they would feel once they have your solution.

Write a note
9. When do they need your solution the most?

With your team, find out they think about the problem the most. Also, consider when they need this solution the most.

1. Write Down Session Goals & Instructions For Participants

Review and add additional information about this session in the Session Goals / Instructions. Add any additional constraints or ideas that come to mind, or include additional links for the team / stakeholders. For example, you may be designing a logo, a piece of furniture, or a piece of software etc. If you have details about product requirements or constraints, make note of them in the Session Goals so that the team can keep them in mind during the session.

2. Pick A Topic Card

Find the Portrait Card deck and pick a card. Tips: You can add one or more cards creating different brainstorming columns. You can prepare the board and add the cards beforehand or use the "random" button to add cards while your brainstorming session is active.

Work on the whiteboard
3. Complete The Chinese Portrait Comparison Phrase

Finish the following phrase based on the topic you chose in the previous step: If [SUBJECT] was [CARD TOPIC] the [SUBJECT] would be [X] because of [Y]. For example, if you were trying to design a new type of chair, and the card topic was ‘color’, the phrase might be: “If this chair we are designing was a color, it would be white because you should feel like you’re sitting on a cloud.” Or if you receive the card topic ‘emotion’: “If this chair we are designing was an emotion, it would be pride because when you sit in it you should feel like a king.” You may already see how the evolution of ideas could take place using this tool. Respond with at least one answer, but should come up with as many ideas as possible within the time limit. Remember that giving [X] reasons is important because it helps generate valuable ideas to build from, and the team can play off one another's ideas.

4. Discuss Answers And Compile Best Ideas

In this step, discuss each other's answers from the previous step.
